Budget Categories
About Budget Categories
An NDIS plan’s funding is generally organised into budget categories. Core supports cover day-to-day support and are often the most flexible. Capacity Building covers skill development, therapy and similar, and is generally tied to specific supports. Capital covers equipment and home or vehicle modifications, generally for a specific approved item.
How strictly funding is tied to a category depends on the category and the plan. Core is typically the most flexible, and Capacity Building and Capital generally less so. A support coordinator or plan manager can walk through the actual breakdown with you. The plan documents, viewable through myplace or the NDIS app, are the record of what has been approved.

Frequently asked questions
Which budget category is the most flexible?
Core supports are typically the most flexible. Capacity Building and Capital are generally less so.
Who can confirm what Budget Categories means for me?
Ask the relevant funding body. A provider can explain its services and billing, but it cannot make a binding funding decision for the responsible body.
What if the rules or my circumstances change?
Check the current guidance with the relevant funding body, tell your providers promptly and update written agreements or approvals before relying on the changed arrangement.
